About Us
Welcome to Shitamachi Tokyo Guide! Here is what you need to know about us:
- Who we are: A local guide run by a Tokyo resident actually living in Edogawa City.
- What we do: Uncover the quiet, authentic “Shitamachi” (downtown) neighborhoods across East Tokyo, including Edogawa, Koto, Katsushika, and Adachi.
- Our Mission: Guiding slow travelers to places only locals know, far away from crowded, famous tourist spots.
Welcome to the Real Tokyo
When most people think of Tokyo, they imagine the neon lights of Shinjuku, the crowded scramble crossing of Shibuya, or the futuristic towers of Roppongi. While those places are exciting, they only show a fraction of what this amazing city has to offer.
If you are a slow traveler looking for peace, authenticity, and a deep connection with local Japanese culture, you belong in East Tokyo.
About the Creator: A Local Perspective
Hi, I’m Hikaru Okazaki, the founder and writer behind Shitamachi Tokyo Guide. I am currently living in Edogawa City, deeply immersed in the traditional and quiet neighborhoods of East Tokyo.
Rather than relying on guidebooks, I personally walk the streets of Edogawa, Koto, Katsushika, and Adachi to discover the hidden gems. I realize that the most beautiful parts of Japan are often hidden in plain sight. They are found in the smell of a local bakery in Kasai, the quiet riverbanks of Shinozaki at sunset, and the warm smiles of a family-run Izakaya in Koiwa.
Why “Slow Travel”?
Modern tourism often feels like a checklist—rushing from one famous landmark to another just to take a photo. We believe in a different approach. We completely skip the famous tourist traps.
Slow travel is about wandering through residential alleys, taking local buses instead of crowded tourist trains, and appreciating traditional crafts in a quiet suburb. We focus exclusively on places only locals know—areas where English menus might be rare, but local hospitality is abundant.
